I’ll be honest - I used to hate gardening. When I was a kid, trips to the garden centre were definitely not my idea of a good time. I’d only agree to go if there was a playground nearby. I wasn’t the most patient helper, I’m sure my mum would agree!

Somewhere along the way, that changed. When I moved out of home, I started out growing a few herbs and greens in our flat garden - just enough to pick for dinner. Then came our first house, and with it, a real vegetable patch and a couple of chooks. I’d spend hours out there, tending to it and feeling proud of every little sprout that popped up.

A friend introduced me to River Cottage and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, and I thought, that looks like the life! Eventually, we moved to a bit of land in the country, and I discovered that while it is fun, it’s definitely not easy. Still, there’s something deeply satisfying about growing food from the soil under your feet.

Now we’ve got more chickens, some sheep, and a garden that keeps expanding a little more each year. It’s always changing, it’s never perfect, but it’s ours - and there’s nothing better than feeding my family with food we’ve grown ourselves.

Along the way, I helped out with a local Garden to Table programme. There was one boy I’ll never forget - not a fan of classroom learning, but out in the garden he came alive. He listened, he learned, and he thrived. That experience opened my eyes to how gardening can ground us, grow confidence, and create pride in ways that reach far beyond food.

I decided then that I'd like to share what I’ve learned, to make gardening easier and more rewarding and to help more people reconnect with where their food comes from and find joy in nurturing something that, in turn, nurtures them.
